Difficult Extraction Clinic - Primary Care
At the Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne (RDHM) Primary Care , we offer a dedicated Difficult Extraction Clinic for the management of complex dental extractions. Our team of highly skilled general dentists, trained in surgical extractions, are committed to providing exceptional care for patients requiring advanced extraction procedures.
Clinical Criteria for Referral
We accept referrals for cases that meet the following criteria:
- Symptomatic teeth requiring surgical extraction, including soft tissue-impacted third molars (e.g., 38, 48).
- Ineffective local anaesthesia during routine extraction attempts.
- Failed previous extractions where other methods have been unsuccessful.
- Patients on anti-resorptive medications for osteoporosis management.
Please note: Patients must be physically able and willing to undergo treatment under local anesthesia in a dental chair.
Limitations of the Extraction Clinic
Our clinic is specifically designed for managing complex extractions that can be effectively handled by general dentists. For cases that require specialised care, we recommend referral to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department at RDHM for further evaluation and treatment.
Referral Prerequisites
To ensure optimal care and treatment, all referrals must include:
- A diagnostic-quality OPG radiograph taken within the last 12 months.
- Bitewing and periapical radiographs of diagnostic quality, where applicable.
- A comprehensive medical history.
- Completion of the Difficult Extraction Clinic Primary Care Referral Form.
